Meyer's longsword 101 - Chapter 11 - Fencing from the stances: Wrath

Play 1: You take the vor

Move into right wrath guard

Do nothing

Step and cut Zorn from right to left ear

Parry left

Cut unterhau from left

Parry right, not lift arms to strike

Slice their arms, then give them a good shove backwards, then cut at the closest opening

Parry and recover, attempt to cut back at opponent

Set aside, slice off, or slice their arms. Shove them off and cut at their body again...

Etc.*


*Basically, alternate between slicing to their body, then to their sword, then to their body. This is probably just general good advice.




Play 2: They cut at your to your left

Step right and push hilt over your head into a left hanging, and catch their cut on your flat

Step left and wind cut with short edge under their sword at their head (a schielhau, ending in left Ox)

Yank upwards and cut an unterhau from your left to their lower right

Don't let them parry and cut prelhau (with flat) from right to their left ear

Exit while cutting away



Play 3: They cut at you from above

Follow throug hthe cut with a krumphau or Round, knocking their blade away

Raise blade

As they raise the blade, cut a Round or Krumphau from the left to the right, knocking aside their blade

Swing your blade around your head and cut a flat Prelhau from your left to their right ear, as a mittelhau.



Play 4: They don't want to cut

Lean forward onto your left leg and cut a zorn down to left Change guard, without taking a passing step. Cut back up with the short edge to Wrath. Do this 2 or 3 times.

When the opportunity arises, as you cut up with the short edge, yank the sword around your head and cut an unterhau from your left to their lower right, while advancing with two steps

Cut a zwerch from your right to their left ear, raising pommel to make the cut go deeper

Feint a Zwerch or Unterhaiu from your left to their right, then quickly cut back around from your right as you retreat.

Plunging cut to feint a high thrust, into right Ox.

Unterhau from the right with a retreat, to their left arm or ear

Feint a cut from your right, then cut a Circle (basically a Krumphau) at their right ear, then cut a Scheitelhau

Cut two Zwerches, left and then right



Rule [Regel]

'When you stand in the right or left Wrath, and one cuts at your from below, either at your right or left opening: cut at that from above with the long edge and, in that moment in which the weapons contact, shoot the point on top of their sword at their face. Lift your hands indesly and work at the closest opening using the sequences mentioned above or below.'


Play 6: Left wrath

From left Wrath guard, drive 2 or 3 cuts into right change and back

When ready, as you cut up with the short edge, cut a left Unterhau, then swing it around (Round) and cut another left Unterhau

Cut a Zwerch from your right at their left ear

Now cut/flick Zwerches at all four openings, regardless of whether you use the flat, long or false edge
